ON THE USE OF THE ETHNONYMS “ALAN”, “AVAR” AND “SCYTHIAN” IN MEDIEVAL ARMENIAN SOURCES OF THE XIII-XIX CENTURIES

А.Е. АКОПЯН · 2023

Catalogue summary

Previously overlooked Armenian epigraphy, histories, manuscript colophons, and memorial records from the thirteenth through nineteenth centuries are translated and analyzed to track shifting uses of Alan, Avar, and Scythian ethnonyms across the Caucasus.

Why this matters

The study demonstrates why Armenian narrative context and changing book traditions matter when reconstructing medieval ethnic and political geography.
