Administrative Map of the Karabakh Khanate in 1822
The Karabakh Khanate was a khanate that existed from 1748 until 1822 when it was disestablished by the Russian empire and reorganised into the Karabakh Province. The khanate was divided into 24 mahals, the capital of Shusha and 6 autonomous Melikdoms (certain mahals and Melikdoms overlapped), this map shows that administrative structure alongside the borders of the khanate itself. The six autonomous Melikdoms were Gulistan (Talish Mahal), Jraberd (Chiliabiurt Mahal), Khachen (Mahal), Varanda (Mahal), Dizak (Mahal) & lastly Kochiza (which registered as part of Varanda Mahal). The autonomous region of Tsar was located with the Melikdom of Jraberd. The borders of the Karabakh Khanate are based on natural boundaries (watersheds, ridges, rivers) that separated the villages of the Karabakh Khanate from the villages outside the khanate. The mahal boundaries are based on natural boundaries that separated the mahal villages where applicable, otherwise they follow approximate lines separating the mahal villages.
