The Armenian population of Artsakh, 1897 to 2023

An interactive map of Artsakh’s Armenian population, census by census, from 1897 to the emptying of 2023. Every figure traces to a source, and estimated values are drawn apart from counted ones.

It covers 52 of the roughly 301 settlements of the former autonomous oblast and republic: the ones whose location and fate could both be sourced. The population record is thinner than that, and it is not constant — 1 settlement has a figure for 1897, 16 for 1979, 51 of the 52 for 2005 — so the counter rises partly because the record fills in, and the map states its denominator for every year. A value is the last census at or before the year on screen, held flat and never interpolated. The 2005 and 2015 counts were conducted by the authorities of an unrecognized state and were not internationally supervised. The dashed line is the Soviet administrative boundary of 1923 to 1991; the settlements drawn outside it — Shahumyan and Getashen to the north, Berdzor and Karvachar to the west — were Armenian too.
