The Roots of the Racial Nationalism of the Committee of Union and Progress: Ideas, Individuals, Influences

Galustyan, Regina · 2022

Traces the intellectual roots of the racial nationalism that drove the Committee of Union and Progress (Young Turks) toward genocide. Shows how European thinkers (Gobineau, Le Bon, Vambery, Cahun, von der Goltz) shaped CUP ideologists seeking to convert a multi-ethnic empire into a Turkish nation-state. Draws on Ottoman, Armenian, and European sources to map how social Darwinism and pan-Turkism entered CUP thinking.
