Vardanyan treats the mythopoetic image of the world as a secondary elaboration of reality through sign systems anchored in archaic structures and archetypes. Because poetic speech is metaphorical, writers often draw unwittingly on the universal sign systems of folk thought and generate new ones from them. Isahakyan's lyric poetry has been analysed repeatedly for its ideological and thematic layers, but this study starts elsewhere: it traces symbolic representations in Isahakyan's picture of the world back to their mythic origins, working through his treatments of man and the cosmos, space and time, sound and silence.
