Образ Гарегина Нжде в армянской и российской коллективной памяти: символический конфликт в городском пространстве (The Image of Garegin Nzhdeh in Armenian and Russian Collective Memory: Symbolic Conflict in Urban Space)
Volkhonsky, Mikhail A. and Yarlykapov, Akhmet A. · 2022
A study of the protracted 2012–2019 conflict in Armavir (Krasnodar Krai) between city authorities and the local branch of the Union of Armenians of Russia over a memorial plaque to Garegin Nzhdeh placed near the Armenian church. The authors use the dispute to identify the commemorative politics practiced by the Armenian diaspora in Russia. The conflict turns on the incompatibility of two collective memories: for Russian Armenians Nzhdeh is primarily a national hero of the struggle for Armenian independence, while in the dominant Russian memory he is a figure who dealt with Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
