Saint Grégoire l'Illuminateur dans l'église de Tigran Honenc' (Saint Gregory the Illuminator in the Church of Tigran Honents)

Rapti, Ioanna, 2025
Revue des Études Arméniennes, Vol. 43 (2025), pp. 93–129 (Peeters); DOI 10.2143/REA.43.0.3295020

Rapti gives a narratological reading of the St Gregory the Illuminator fresco cycle in the thirteenth-century church at Ani founded by the wealthy citizen Tigran Honents. She analyses how the compositions are arranged, how the cycle is structured, and how the episodes vary in size, all in service of constructing Gregory's sanctity. Four phases emerge: the torture; the imprisonment in the pit and the escape; the vision and acclamation, paralleled with the miracle of St Nino; and Gregory's ministry, fulfilled in his ascetic death. Because the cycle builds to a climax around the church door, she argues it is not a plodding transposition of Agathangelos into pictures but a creative appropriation of the hagiographic tradition of the founders of Caucasian Christianity.

How this repository is built

What is in this repository?

Peer-reviewed and institutional scholarship on Armenian subjects — history, the Armenian Genocide, Artsakh, language and literature, the church, and the diaspora — in any language and from any country. Journal articles, books, book chapters, theses and institute publications are all in scope. Entries are chosen for what they contribute to an Armenian student's understanding, not for how recent or how famous they are.

What does 'verified' mean here?

It means a person opened the link and checked the record against the publisher's own page: the title, the authors, the venue, the volume and pages, and the identifier. The date of that check is shown on each entry's page. Where an entry has no date shown, no check has been logged for it yet, and the catalogue does not claim one.

What is the summary on each entry?

A short account of what the publication does, followed by notes on what it offers different readers — a student writing a term paper, an academic, someone reading for the community, someone new to the subject. They are meant to tell you what a piece is useful for, not only what it argues.

How do I suggest a publication, or report an error?

Use the 'Suggest a publication' link at the foot of the directory. The same address takes corrections — a broken link, a wrong page range, a misattributed author. Corrections are checked against the publisher's record before an entry changes.
