Seda Parsamyan traces the demolition policy of the Hamidian massacres of the 1890s and puts the legal question directly: when a state sets out to erase a people's churches, at what point does that become cultural genocide? She works through how the concept has been defined, redefined and quietly narrowed by people who would rather it did not apply. The frame she builds is the one now being reached for over Artsakh.

Not Only Franz Werfel: The Lesser-Known Works of Foreign Writers on the Armenian Genocide

Bakhchinyan surveys little-known literary works from 28 countries that treat the Armenian Genocide in whole or in part, spanning poetry, prose and drama across nearly every genre from historical fiction to horror and children's literature. He deliberately excludes authors of Armenian origin and concentrates on material absent from the 1996 Armenian Question encyclopedia or published after it. He finds that foreign authors generally worked from non-Armenian eyewitness testimony, and that they most often render the Genocide through the fate of a survivor: frequently a woman or child. Writers covered include Carducci, Galsworthy, Huxley, Cheever, Updike, Iskander, Kalinoski and Moleskis.

Les hayrēns arméniens comparés aux albas des troubadours occitans (The Armenian Hayrens Compared with the Albas of the Occitan Troubadours)

The hayrens, Armenian poetic couplets in a popular style, were attributed to Nahapet Kuchak by their first publisher in 1882, but as Manuk Abeghyan recognized they are in reality anonymous folk works, or the work of authors whose names were lost. Kuchak is therefore not the author but the heir to a line of bards and itinerant singers who transmitted them across generations. The authors show that certain hayren types resemble the albas of the French and Occitan troubadours, which stage lovers forced to part at dawn. Where the troubadours blame social etiquette, the hayrens instead blame the dawn itself, the birds, or the crowing of the cock.
