What is being done to Armenian monuments in Artsakh now is not new and it is not vandalism. Seda Parsamyan traces the demolition policy of the Hamidian massacres of the 1890s and puts the legal question directly: when a state sets out to erase a people's churches, at what point does that become cultural genocide? She works through how the concept has been defined, redefined and quietly narrowed by people who would rather it did not apply. The frame she builds is the one now being reached for over Artsakh.

Uncovering Theological Inconsistencies in the History of Agathangelos

Examines two prayer-texts in the fifth-century History of Armenia attributed to Agathangelos and asks whether their theological inconsistencies were in the original composition or crept in through later editing and copying. Reviewing all editions, Sahakyan argues the contested passages are probably not original despite their long presence in the transmission, since they conflict with the doctrinal tenets expressed elsewhere in the prayers and in the History as a whole. He calls for a new critical edition attentive to doctrinal questions, and discusses comparable inconsistencies in the Epic Histories of Pawstos Buzand as a parallel case.

Cowe produced both the critical edition of the Armenian text and the English translation of the theological discourses of Mkhitar Sasnetsi, a leading Armenian churchman and scholar of the first half of the fourteenth century, published in the CSCO: the principal international series for editions of Eastern Christian texts. The two volumes appear as CSCO 542 (Armenian text) and CSCO 543 (English translation).
