What is being done to Armenian monuments in Artsakh now is not new and it is not vandalism. Seda Parsamyan traces the demolition policy of the Hamidian massacres of the 1890s and puts the legal question directly: when a state sets out to erase a people's churches, at what point does that become cultural genocide? She works through how the concept has been defined, redefined and quietly narrowed by people who would rather it did not apply. The frame she builds is the one now being reached for over Artsakh.

Observing South Caucasus' Historical Landscape: An Open Photo Archive. Tools, Activities, and Purposes of the OSCOP Project

Presents the OSCOP project, which collects, digitises and catalogues a photographic archive documenting the cultural heritage of the South Caucasus, held by the Centro di Studi e Documentazione della Cultura Armena in Venice. The collection derives from the research missions led by Adriano Alpago Novello from 1967 onward and comprises roughly 10,000 items. Preservation work targets three layers: the photographic object itself, the intangible historical layers (site ownership, historical stratification and toponymy), and the architectural and natural heritage of historical Armenia and Georgia. The authors devote substantial attention to cataloguing method, arguing for transliteration over translation of Armenian names in order to resist toponymic erasure and appropriation of contested heritage.

An Historical Geographic Information System for Ottoman Studies: The c. 1907 Ottoman Census and Armenian Settlement in Istanbul

Announces the publication of a partial transcription of the c. 1907 Ottoman census covering 24,000 Apostolic Armenian Istanbulites, together with a historical geographic information system, an interactive map, showing where those individuals lived. The authors first argue that an unidentified, microfilmed population register held in New York is the most substantial portion of this census currently available to researchers. They then introduce historical GIS as a tool for the digital humanities and describe the process of building one. The piece is simultaneously a source-critical study and a methodological guide for spatial history in Ottoman studies.

What is in this repository?

Peer-reviewed and institutional scholarship on Armenian subjects — history, the Armenian Genocide, Artsakh, language and literature, the church, and the diaspora — in any language and from any country. Journal articles, books, book chapters, theses and institute publications are all in scope. Entries are chosen for what they contribute to an Armenian student's understanding, not for how recent or how famous they are.

What does 'verified' mean here?

It means a person opened the link and checked the record against the publisher's own page: the title, the authors, the venue, the volume and pages, and the identifier. The date of that check is shown on each entry's page. Where an entry has no date shown, no check has been logged for it yet, and the catalogue does not claim one.
